Is ‘Chad Pigeon’ real or fake?

The internet has been abuzz with the recent appearance of a peculiar pigeon that has left millions of people baffled. Dubbed the ‘chad pigeon’, ‘mutant pigeon’, ‘bodybuilder pigeon’, and ‘world’s buffest pigeon’, this bird has captured the attention of netizens worldwide. With its puffed-out chest and ridiculously long legs, many have questioned whether this unusual creature is real or simply a product of digital manipulation.

The mystery began when a UK pigeon breeder shared a clip of their impressive-looking bird on TikTok. The video quickly went viral, garnering millions of views and sparking debates about the authenticity of the bird. Some viewers were convinced that the clip was AI-generated or digitally altered for views. However, it turns out that the bird in question is indeed real and belongs to a rare pigeon breed called the “English Pouter.”

According to English naturalist William Bernhardt Tegetmeier, the origin of the English Pouter is somewhat of a mystery. It is believed to be the result of cross-breeding between old pigeon breeds like the Dutch Cropper, Uploper, and the Parisian Pouter. The breed is characterized by its extremely puffed-out chest and long legs, which are breed-specific traits. The English Pouter is often referred to as ‘the most distinct of all domesticated pigeons.’

Pigeon breeder Frank Barrachina told Backyard Poultry that the English Pouter’s body is slim with a ‘V-shaped keel,’ making it quite different from the typical pigeon one might imagine. The breed’s ability to fill its crop with air and maintain its puffed-out appearance for extended periods is believed to have developed to increase the success rate of courtship rituals.

While the “Chad pigeon” may have taken the internet by storm, it is not the only unusual-looking pigeon breed out there. Other unique breeds include the Google-eyed Budapest Short-Faced Tumbler and the curly frill-back pigeon.

The viral “chad pigeon” is indeed real and a specimen of the rare English Pouter breed. Its peculiar appearance may have left many people questioning its authenticity, but this majestic bird serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity within the pigeon family. With over 352 recognized species in the Columbidae family, pigeons continue to surprise and fascinate us with their remarkable variations.
