On July 15, 2023, a sudden flash flood wreaked havoc in the Bucks County area near Washington Crossing Road, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives and leaving several others missing. The flood was so severe that it inundated highways, blocked roads, and left the water level about five feet above the ground.
The victims included two women and one man from the Washington Crossing area in Upper Makefield Township. The identity of the fourth victim has not been disclosed by the authorities. The missing persons are reported to be a family of four, including two adults and two young children aged two years and nine months.
The unexpected deluge, which saw between three and a half to four inches of rain falling within a span of two hours on Saturday afternoon, led to the closure of several roads in both Upper and Lower Makefield Townships. The rapidity and intensity of the rainfall caught many off guard, with eyewitness Nick Primola from Yardley describing the scene as cars being swept away, overturned, and abandoned on local roadways.
In response to the crisis, multiple marine units were dispatched for search and rescue operations. The Newtown Township Police Department is assisting the Upper Makefield Township Police Department in these efforts. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid traveling through flooded roadways to ensure the safety of emergency personnel.
Despite the community’s familiarity with flooding due to the area’s numerous waterways, the speed and severity of this particular flash flood took many by surprise. As the search and rescue operations continue into the night, the Bucks County Coroner’s Office confirmed that there are still people missing, indicating a long and challenging night ahead for the rescue teams.
