Electricity price goes up by Rs1.25 per unit

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) announced on Tuesday an Rs1.25 per unit increase due to fuel costs adjustment for the fiscal year 2022-23’s last quarter (April-June).

On May 24, the regulatory authority deferred its decision on applications filed by electricity distribution companies (DISCOs).

Electricity customers will pay the additional amount on their bills in July, August, and September. This rise in power tariff under the heading FCA will not apply to lifeline users, while power distribution companies (DISCOs) will independently reflect the increase in power price in consumers’ bills over the following three months.

Separately, under a recently signed loan arrangement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the federal government is expected to raise power tariffs by Rs3.50 per unit.

According to reports, the federal government will make a final decision on whether to raise the electricity tariff all at once or in stages. If the per unit price is raised by one rupee, customers will incur an extra cost of Rs100 billion.
