Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) governments have announced an extended winter vacation for educational institutions located in cold, mountainous regions where temperatures can drop below freezing. The break will last two and a half months – from December 16, 2023, to February 29, 2024.
In a formal notification, Zafar Ali Buledi, Secretary for Colleges and Technical Education in Balochistan, stated that the long vacation is aimed at avoiding making students commute to schools in harsh winter conditions. The new academic year will commence on March 1st in these areas.
Meanwhile, schools and colleges in Punjab, Sindh, and Islamabad will observe a shorter winter break from December 16th to 31st.
The winter months of December to February bring extremely cold temperatures to the mountainous parts of Balochistan and KP.
Announcing an extended vacation prevents exposing school children to the freezing weather during the daily commute. It allows them to avoid traveling on dangerous mountain roads prone to blockage due to heavy snow.
The governments take this measure every year to facilitate uninterrupted education while safeguarding children’s health. The vacation’s duration aligns with peak winter, allowing a convenient restart of the academic calendar when the weather becomes more amenable in early spring.
