WhatsApp Tests New Video and Audio Sharing for Ultimate Watch Parties Experience

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will allow users to share video and audio from their phones during video calls for more immersive communication. The feature enables collaborative watching and listening experiences similar to watch parties.

The new capability appears to build on WhatsApp’s existing screen sharing feature rolled out in August 2022. While screen sharing, audio played on a user’s device will also be shared with others on the call.

The feature could be useful for activities like co-viewing videos, listening to music together, or hosting remote watch parties. However, it will reportedly not work during voice calls or if a user has disabled their video during a call.

Parent company Meta is exploring deeper integration between WhatsApp and Instagram. Recently leaked testing shows the ability for Instagram users to link their accounts to WhatsApp, allowing convenient cross-posting.

While privacy-conscious users may still prefer alternatives, WhatsApp continues to be one of the most feature-full messaging apps. Testing shows the company continuously innovating to improve functionality and user experience.
