WhatsApp’s Upcoming Feature to Enable Cross-Platform Messaging

WhatsApp is taking steps towards cross-platform compatibility. A recent beta update for Android (version 2.23.19.8) has introduced a new screen labeled “Third-party chats.” Although currently non-functional and inaccessible to users, this feature hints at the possibility of messaging across different chat applications in the future.

This development comes in the wake of the European Commission’s recent classification of Meta as a “gatekeeper” under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA aims to prevent gatekeepers from imposing unfair conditions and ensure the accessibility of crucial digital services. As per the DMA, communication software like WhatsApp must establish interoperability with third-party messaging apps by March 2024.

The DMA also requires gatekeepers to allow users to uninstall pre-installed apps and explore alternative app stores. In response to these regulations, both Meta and Microsoft have expressed their intentions to establish their mobile app stores. Meanwhile, the European Commission is conducting an inquiry to determine if Apple’s iMessage and Microsoft’s Bing search engine, Edge browser, and advertising service comply with the new regulation.

While the “Third-party chats” feature is still in its developmental stage, it represents a significant step towards enhancing user experience and promoting digital inclusivity. This move could potentially revolutionize the way users interact across different platforms, breaking down barriers and fostering seamless communication. However, users will have to wait until the feature becomes fully functional to fully appreciate its benefits.
