WhatsApp has rolled out a new update for iOS users that now gives them the ability to send uncompressed photos and videos up to 2GB in size. This brings the iPhone version of the messaging app on par with Android, which has had this capability for some time.
The update comes as part of WhatsApp version 23.3.77. Previously, iPhone users were limited to sending compressed media, while only Android users could utilize the ‘Documents’ section to send original quality files.
With the latest update, iPhone owners can now tap the ‘Documents’ option when sharing a photo or video to send the uncompressed original version. This lossless sharing allows content to be sent in its maximum quality instead of a compressed and lower-quality file.
There are some limitations. WhatsApp has set a file size limit of 2GB for media sent this way. So users can’t share lengthy 4K or 8K videos without compression. But for most everyday photo and video sharing, this limit provides ample flexibility.
This update closes a gap between WhatsApp’s iOS and Android versions that had existed for quite some time. It brings the platforms to parity in terms of media-sharing capabilities.
Early reports had claimed WhatsApp was working on adding lossless sharing directly within the app’s gallery. But for now, the Documents route provides a reliable way for iPhone owners to finally send uncompressed photos and videos to friends and family.
