What is Fitra (Sadqat-ul-Fitr)?

Fitra, also known as Sadqat-ul-Fitr, is an obligatory charity that every self-sufficient Muslim must pay before the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer. The core purpose of Fitra is to enable poor individuals to celebrate Eid joyfully along with the rest of the community, and to purify the fasting person from any minor mistakes made during the holy month of Ramadan.

Difference Between Fitra and Fidya

While both are forms of Islamic financial compensation, they apply in different contexts:

1. Fitra: Obligatory upon every household member (regardless of age or gender) at the end of Ramadan. It is calculated based on a fixed weight of commodities per person (approx. 2.25 KG).

2. Fidya: Applicable only when an individual cannot fast due to a valid, permanent reason (such as chronic illness, extreme old age, or frailty). Fidya is paid per missed fast to feed a needy person two meals a day.

Who is Eligible to Receive Fitra?

Fitra can be given to those categories of individuals eligible to receive Zakat, primarily focusing on the poor (Fuqara) and the needy (Masakeen). It is highly encouraged to distribute it among needy relatives first (excluding immediate dependents like parents or children) or close neighbors before exploring broader charity distributions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: When should Fitra be paid?

A: It should ideally be paid during the last days of Ramadan and must be distributed before the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer begins so that the needy can make use of it for Eid.

Q: Is Fitra obligatory for children and newborn babies?

A: Yes, the head of the family must pay Fitra on behalf of dependents, including young children and even infants born before the sunset of the last day of Ramadan.

Q: How is the value of Fitra determined in Pakistan?

A: The value is determined based on the current local market price of 2.25 KG of commodities like Wheat, Barley, Dates, or Raisins. This calculator allows you to input live prices for exact calculation.
