WhatsApp has started testing the ability for users to post status updates directly through WhatsApp Web. The latest beta version of WhatsApp Web (2.2353.59) allows users to upload images, videos, and text to be shared as status updates, without needing to transfer the files to their primary smartphone first.
This new feature is currently in limited beta testing, as reported by WABetaInfo, but is expected to roll out more widely soon. It builds on recent efforts by WhatsApp to expand status-sharing capabilities to companion devices linked to a user’s account.
Allowing status updates directly from WhatsApp Web eliminates an extra step for users who create content on their computers. They can now seamlessly post that content as ephemeral status updates for their WhatsApp contacts, without having to transfer files to their phone first.
Given the widespread use of WhatsApp Web globally, enabling this status-sharing feature has implications. Users anywhere with a device and browser can now access the full functionality of WhatsApp status posting.
As WhatsApp continues expanding features across platforms, users can expect more convenient ways to access key social sharing capabilities from any device. Posting status updates from the web browser is the latest demonstration of this push towards platform agnosticism.
