Twitter(X) Set to Introduce Long-Awaited Audio and Video Calls

Twitter (X) has announced its plans to finally introduce audio and video call features. This announcement comes after several previous intentions to launch these features were either delayed or scrapped entirely.

The news was confirmed by X’s owner, Elon Musk, who stated that the new features would be compatible with both mobile devices and computers, including Android, iOS, Windows, and MacOS platforms. The introduction of these features is expected to revolutionize the way users interact on the platform.

Musk further elaborated that the new feature would not necessitate the use of phone numbers. Instead, X will function as a global address book, utilizing usernames for identification. Musk described this combination of factors as unique, indicating a significant shift in the platform’s functionality.

However, Musk did not provide a specific timeline for the launch of these features, only stating that they are “coming”. Despite the lack of a concrete date, the anticipation among users is palpable, with many eagerly awaiting the new additions.

Last month, the company’s designer shared a glimpse of what the new features might look like. According to the shared screenshots, once the feature goes live, users’ direct messages (DMs) on X will display a phone receiver icon at the top right corner. Tapping on this icon will present options for an audio or video call.

The interface for video calls appears to be user-friendly, featuring a standard call UI. It includes a picture-in-picture screen displaying the user’s own video feed alongside the contact’s video. Additional controls include buttons to end the call, turn off the camera, mute oneself, or disable speakers.

However, it’s important to note that the final version of the feature may differ slightly from the preview. As the social media world awaits this significant update, it’s clear that X is poised to redefine digital communication.
