Admission to nursing colleges in Punjab will now be performed through a centralized procedure, similar to that of public sector medical and dental institutions in the state, to maintain uniformity and standardization.
The admission procedure will be overseen by the University of Health Sciences (UHS), and candidates will be required to apply for the 4-year BSc Nursing Program via an online portal.
This decision was made during a special meeting of the UHS Board of Studies in Nursing, presided over by Punjab’s temporary Health Minister, Professor Javed Akram.
The participants in the discussion unanimously decided to centralize nurse admissions. The Admission Committee will be chaired by the Secretary of SHCI, and members will include the Vice-Chancellors of all medical universities and the Director General of Nursing. In September, an advertisement for BSc Nursing admissions will be issued.
Candidates will be able to register online in October, and the first merit list will be revealed in December. Nursing school classes are expected to begin in March. The new policy will be implemented beginning with the 2023-24 school year. In addition, an expert group has been created to suggest curricular modifications, with proposals due within a month.
Another key decision was taken during the conference to develop Punjab’s first nursing journal, to promote scientific research in the profession. The Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WCCI) in Lahore has also announced plans to offer three and six-month short courses in English language, IT, and interpersonal skills for nurses to help them advance in their careers. To support this partnership, WCCI, and UHS will establish a formal agreement.
Prof. Javed Akram, Provincial Health Minister, addressed the audience and emphasized the current improvements in the nursing curriculum across Punjab. He also declared that nursing college faculty members will be sent to the United Kingdom for doctorate studies (Ph.D.) to develop their knowledge and contribute to the progress of the nursing profession.
