Peloton is recalling 2.2 million of its exercise bikes and urging customers to contact the company for free repairs after reports of injuries caused by the seats breaking.
Peloton said it had disclosed 35 cases of “seatposts breaking” on its products sold in the U.S. between January 2018 and May 2023, adding that “the part that connects the saddle to the frame He can break under certain conditions on his $995 bike.”
Peloton has received several reports of customers with broken wrists and bruises after falling off their bikes.
The company also noted that the UK is not affected by the recall.
The recall affected the Peloton model PL01.
The company said in the statement: “Our commitment to member safety is unwavering.”
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said: “The Peloton has received 35 reports of seatposts breaking and detaching from the bike during use, including 13 reports of injuries including broken wrists, lacerations and bruises caused by falls from the bike. Included.”
The commission also noted: “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled exercise bikes and contact Peloton for a free repair. Peloton is offering consumers a free seat post that they installed themselves. can go.”
According to Peloton’s website: “Consumers can contact Peloton toll-free at 866-679-9129, seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m., or find more information on Peloton’s website.”
The company said the recall only affects original Peloton bikes sold in the United States, not international models and not its most recent Bike+ model.
This is not the first time that serious regulatory incidents have occurred. In 2021, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using Peloton’s Tread+ treadmill, citing dozens of safety incidents, including the death of a child.
The company said earlier this year that it would pay a $19 million fine for failing to report these safety issues with its treadmills.
The company’s announcement marks the fourth time Peloton has disclosed product defects in recent years following a recall of bicycle pedals and two of its treadmills.
The exercise equipment maker said: The latest issue with its saddles will cost an estimated $8.4 million.
The company’s share price rose during the pandemic as people started exercising at home during the lockdown. Since the gym reopened, it has struggled with declining sales.
