Geneva: According to media reports, for the first time in Switzerland, a prisoner ended his life with the help of a suicide organization.
The man, who has not been named, died on Feb. 28 with the help of an exit organization, the Wuchen Zeitung weekly’s Thursday edition reported.
The assisted suicide is said to have taken place in North Bostadel prison near Zurich.
Under the guidelines of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences, assisted suicide is reserved for people with a serious incapacitating illness causing “unbearable suffering”.
It was the first time in Switzerland that a prisoner was allowed to commit suicide.
“Due to data and identity protection, we cannot provide any information about those who assist or accompany suicides,” Exit said. AFP.
The Zurich region’s directorate of justice and domestic affairs confirmed to the Swiss news agency ATS that an assisted suicide had taken place, but did not provide any information about the prisoner involved.
The procedure usually takes place at the person’s home, a relative’s home, or in a nursing home or hospital.
