Golden Globes host Jerrod Carmichael recently criticized the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) diversity controversy in his opening monologue at the 80th Golden Globe Awards.
During Tuesday’s award ceremony, Jarrod said, “I’ll tell you why I’m here. I’m here because I’m black.
Noting to the LA Times that the awarding body did not have “a single black member,” Jarrod pointed out, “I wouldn’t say the HFPA is racist but, until the death of George Floyd, they didn’t have one. Black wasn’t a member – do with it. Information you will.”
Describing the process of being offered this hosting gig, Jarrod shared, “One minute you’re making mint tea at home, the next you’re invited to be the black face of a white organization. “
The host revealed that he called his friend who asked him about the payment. To that, he replied, “About $500,000”.
“My friend told me to take white people’s money,” Jerrod quipped.
Finally, Jerrod added that he had not met HFPA President Helen Hoehne before the event.
“I took this job with the assumption that they haven’t changed at all,” he concluded.
