The Glass Onion: A Knives Mystery Director Rian Johnson shared how he initially rejected the idea of including a secret twin.
Spoiler: In the original movie Glass onions The killer is shown to the audience right before the middle of the film, to take them on a completely different path before returning to the actual murder, which wasn’t a murder at all.
However, in this recently debuted sequel, director Rian Johnson opted for another mid-film reveal, but this time with a twist, surrounding the character of Andy, played by Janelle Muni.
Speaking of twists with Wrapped, Ryan admitted his initial dislike of what he described as a “terrible trope”, the idea of including a secret twin, before actually concluding that it was the best way to proceed.
“I guess the main thing was that it couldn’t just be seen from a different angle. It’s enough of a fundamental perspective change that there’s a new tension that’s introduced in the repetition of all the different scenes.” he said.
“That’s what created the idea of twins. Through the process, I was dragged kicking and screaming towards identical twins. I didn’t want to do it, it seemed like a terrible trope. [I thought] ‘Will the audience ever forgive me for this? I think we get away with it because it’s not like a revelation at the end — it’s a complication in the middle that deepens the stakes and the story,” he added.
