Tokyo: The Chinese embassy in Tokyo announced on Sunday that it will resume issuing visas to Japanese citizens.
The move ends a retaliatory move against Japan’s decision to require Covid testing for travelers arriving from mainland China, where the number of infections has been rising.
“Starting today, the embassy and consul general offices of the People’s Republic of China will resume issuing normal visas to Japanese citizens,” a brief online notice issued by the embassy said without elaborating.
China stopped issuing visas to Japanese citizens on January 10 after Tokyo began requiring people arriving from the mainland to be tested before traveling and upon landing.
Beijing called Tokyo’s move “discriminatory”, while Japan argued it was necessary given the spread of infections in China.
