“It was a gesture and an invitation to dialogue and I sincerely hope that the invitation will be answered,” he told reporters.
China and Russia declared a “no borders” partnership in February last year, shortly before Putin ordered his troops into Ukraine.
China has tried to keep itself neutral in the war, while deepening ties with Moscow, particularly in the energy sector.
But some analysts have suggested that Beijing may eventually step in as a mediator to negotiate an end to the fighting in Ukraine.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi last September called on “all relevant parties to stop the crisis from spreading”, and expressed concern about the economic impact of the conflict that has affected countries around the world.
Zielinski told the South China Morning Post newspaper in August that he had “officially asked for talks” with Xi, adding that talks would be “helpful”.
The foreign ministers of the two countries met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.
