Twitter has been criticized for allegedly having its staff work 12 hours a day, seven days a week to carry out the revolutionary authentication upgrade.
“Twitter’s current Lords and Peasants system, with or without a blue checkmark, would have people paying $8 a month for blue-tick verification,” Musk added.
The current authentication method helps users identify influential and authentic Twitter users, including athletes, entertainers, public officials, journalists and large companies.
Before Twitter’s new billionaire owner revealed his ambitions to overhaul the service, some celebrities had hinted at quitting.
Stephen King, Shonda Rhimes and more have quit Twitter.
VPNO privacy expert Naj Ahmad said such changes are “unlikely” to happen soon.
“Twitter is not trying to revolutionize the way people communicate, or disrupt an existing industry, unlike most of Mr. Musk’s existing companies.”
