At least ten suspects have been detained in the case related to the murder of a young girl after being sexually harassed in Karachi’s Quaidabad area on Friday.
According to the police, the accused are being interrogated.
Malir Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Irfan Ali Bahadur suspended SHO Quaidabad and other police officials after taking cognizance of the complaints of the seven-year-old girl’s family.
The girl went missing after she went out of her brother’s house in Muslimabad area of Landhi on Wednesday. However, his family said that the police did not register a case despite going to the police station several times. On Friday, the family found the girl’s body in a garbage dump.
SSP Bahadur said they have detained around 10 suspects and called a medical team to take their DNA samples. The accused were detained with the help of ground intelligence and eyewitness accounts.
The officer said that he and the investigating SSP of Malir visited the spot again along with officials from the Forensic Division and Investigation Department. He also met the girl’s father and informed him about the preliminary investigation.
SSP Bahadur said that a departmental inquiry has been initiated against the negligent policemen in the case, and they have suspended SHO Quaidabad Amin Khoso, head inspector and duty officers of the police station. He said that he will not tolerate any lapse in the investigation.
The deceased was a resident of Quaidabad. On Wednesday, she went missing after going out to play at her brother’s house. Two days later, his body was found by his family in the limits of Quaidabad police station.
The family members took the body to Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center where the initial post-mortem report said that the girl was raped before she was strangled to death and the marks of torture were also found on her body. Later, the body was handed over to the relatives for burial.
The deceased was the third of six sisters. His father is a fruit seller. After her body was found, her family members and relatives protested and demanded the government to take steps to protect the girls so that this does not happen to someone else’s daughter.
