Sidney: A disappointment David Warner Peer said on Monday that he was “not guilty” and that everyone should have the right to appeal as Cricket Australia cleared the way for his lifetime captaincy ban to be lifted.
The dynamic opener and former Test vice-captain was banned from any leadership role in Australia for his role in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal in 2018.
But under an amendment to the CA’s code of conduct approved on Monday, he will now be able to request a review of the approval, a move not previously allowed.
The code of conduct changes were first raised nine months ago and Warner said it had been too long.
The Australian newspaper quoted the 36-year-old in Melbourne as saying, “It’s taken out, it’s painful for me and my family and everyone involved.”
“I think it’s just about being fair that at the end of the day, I’m not guilty. You should have the right to appeal at some stage, you know.
“I understand that they have imposed a ban, but banning someone for life I think is a bit harsh.
“So this is just an opportunity to come out and actually, you know, show that I’m actually remorseful. I’ve bided my time to get back into the Australian cricket set-up.”
Under the new rule, a player must demonstrate that “exceptional circumstances exist to justify a modification of the sanction,” including evidence of remorse and improved behavior.
CA said the policy “recognizes that players and player support staff are capable of genuine reform or rehabilitation”.
“It is intended to provide the player or player’s support personnel with an opportunity to resume their previous duties or responsibilities under certain circumstances,” it added.
Pat Cummins He is currently the Test and ODI captain of Australia. Aaron Finch Captain of the T20 team.
Warner’s suspension would make him a prime candidate to take over the T20 captaincy if Finch steps down, as he did recently from the 50-over format.
Warner will also join Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood and Alex Carey to represent Cummins or act as his vice-captain. This also allows him to lead his own Big Bash League Sydney Thunder.
Warner was cast as the key villain in the “Sandpaper Gate” ball-tampering scandal against South Africa in 2018, having tampered with the ball during the third Test in Cape Town along with then-captain Smith and Cameron Bancroft. had conspired.
Like Warner, Smith was also banned for a year, but his captaincy ban lasted only two years.
Both players bounced back to regain their place in the national team in all three formats of the game.
