Federal Ombudsman directs FBR to investigate sugar, steel, fertilizer and other sectors
Islamabad: The Federal Tax Ombudsman has unearthed a massive multi-billion-rupee scam involving large-scale counterfeit sales tax supplies in the cement sector.
The Federal Tax Ombudsman has directed the Federal Board of Revenue to conduct a comprehensive investigation not only in the cement sector but also in other sectors with heavy business, including sugar, steel, cigarettes, beverages and fertilisers.
According to the Office of the Federal Tax Ombudsman, during investigation on a complaint filed by cement retailers, it was found that two major cement suppliers, while filing their sales tax returns, had disclosed bulk supplies of cement to the complainant retailers, which the complainant called had rejected. and took the stand that the supply shown by the suppliers was not the supply of cement.
The complainant reported the matter of spurious sales tax supplies shown by the suppliers to the concerned Regional Tax Office, Abbottabad, but the concerned RTO failed to record these spurious sales tax supplies in the MIS records of IRIS. The aggrieved cement retailers have applied to the Federal Tax Ombudsman.
According to the Federal Tax Ombudsman’s Office, during investigation it was informed by the RTO that the registered person had sold cement to the complainant as an unregistered buyer. In addition, the Federal Tax Ombudsman has directed the Director General of Inland Revenue to conduct a comprehensive investigation not only in the cement sector but also in other sectors with heavy business, including sugar, steel, cigarettes, beverages and fertilisers.
