Family and education of Leslie Phillips
Leslie Phillips was born to Cecilia Margaret and Frederick Samuel Phillips, who worked for Glover and Main, a cooker manufacturer in Edmonton. After his father’s death, he was sent to study at the Italian Conti Academy. There, Samuel attended drama and dance classes.
On 20 December 2013, at the age of 89, Leslie Phillips married his third wife, Zara Kerr, after marriages to Penelope and Schooler.
Professional career of Leslie Phillips
Phillips made his stage debut as the wolf in Peter Pan opposite Anna Nagel at the London Palladium. In the 1938 and 1939 seasons, Samuel was promoted to John Napoleon Darling alongside actors Jane Forbes Robertson as Peter and Seymour Hicks as Captain Hook. Acting allowed Samuel Phillips to earn extra money for his family who struggled financially after his father’s death.
Phillips made his film debut in 1938 with the Lancashire musical comedy Lassie. Later, he made more uncredited appearances in Climbing High in 1938 and The Mikado in 1939 and earlier films at Pinewood Studios. On the studios 70th anniversary in 2006, he established himself as one of the earliest actors who still worked there and was working for himself.
Samuel resumed his professional acting career as a film player, appearing in Anna Karenina and Powell and Pressburger’s The Red Shoes in 1948. Phillips’ first lead role in a television series was in the 1952 sitcom My Wife Jacqueline. And did many films till 2012.
Further, he was appointed to the Order of the British Empire in 1998 and 2012.
