My Hero AcademyDeku often showed kindness to the bad guys she encountered, and this often came back in her face when they betrayed her. But now, when many of the former villains he’s forgiven come to the rescue, his kindness is finally rewarded.
Deku is known for his ability to sympathize with his opponents; It’s even caused some concern among fans that Shigaraki might have too much sympathy for his current state. My Hero Academy and forget all the horrible things he did of his own free will. However, Shigaraki is far from the only one who has managed to win Deku’s sympathy in previous episodes. A notable example was the Gentle Criminal, a man who hoped to become a hero someday but got involved in an incident where professional heroes hindered his ability to help. His crimes were always low-grade, and Deku recognized this desire to help in his heart even though he was actively breaking the law at the time. When Gentle lied to protect La Brava, Deku said nothing to contradict him and had La Brava receive a lighter sentence.
Fulfilling a Villain’s True Heroic Dreams
Gentle is back in episode 378. Powered by La Brava’s “Love” Oddity, Gentle uses his Oddity to capture. My Hero Academy Falling UA floating castle using an airbag. La Brava had already helped by hacking into Skeptic’s systems, a League of Villains member responsible for removing UA’s security measures. It’s very important to keep the castle in the air to prevent Shigaraki’s Decay Quirk from destroying everything, so this help is really important. Yet he is not the only one who is kind; The end of the episode also reveals that Lady Nagant, a former hero turned assassin who was later betrayed by All for One, also helped. Lady Nagant was badly injured when All for One fired a concealed Self-Destruct Quirk she had placed inside, but returned to the field, albeit bandaged.
As mentioned above, Gentle is introduced as a man who once wanted to be a hero, but whose luck was ruined by circumstances. With Gentle still in prison, he finally gets the chance to play the hero he always wanted. As they say “absence makes the heart more beautiful” and that was apparently true for La Brava, as Gentle’s empowered state is now much greater than when he first appeared. All of this shows that Gentle is sincere in his desire to help – he probably won’t get much credit for his role in this war, but he still chose to help because it’s the right thing to do.
One major criticism of Gentle’s broadcast in manga and anime is that it has little relevance to anything else in the plot. Bringing Gentle back to help during this darkest time finally brings him back to the story, and it does so in a way that highlights Deku’s greatest strength, his empathy. Gentle’s role My Hero Academy‘s final battle is probably not over yet, so fans eager for his return are ahead when he transforms from polite criminal to hero.
