The new Dead Space Remake received a video from the developers detailing the design process of Isaac Clarke’s costume and offering a look at the re-creation of the iconic armor. The video features the first designers of the suit and their inspiration in the design process.
Dead Space Remake will take players to the USG Ishimura 12 years after their first voyage to the mysterious ship. The new video released by IGN shows the first design sketches of the original suit created by Chi-Wai Lao, and also offers a look at the highly anticipated remake of Visceral Games’ 2008 survival horror. According to the artist’s comments, there were many inspirations before the final version of the costume was decided on. Apparently, the popular anime Neon Genesis Evangelion was also a huge inspiration during the design phase.
“My suit designs were all over the place,” Lao says. And, according to her experience in the process, there was a wide variety of suit designs, ranging from “too tight-fitting to very bulky, some very robotic looking.” In fact, some of his sketches depicted the troubled engineer in a suit carrying a giant sword. Lao also touched on the clever design choice of applying the HUD idea to the back of the garment. The designer talked about how they designed the spine portion of the RIG, saying, “The idea of attaching the HUD to Isaac’s back soon came from the team, and then the spine then went through dramatic changes to implement this HUD.”
The critically acclaimed survival horror received praise for its character design and choice to integrate gameplay mechanics into Isaac’s costume. Alongside the health bar, the brave engineer’s RIG also displayed remaining oxygen when entering a toxic field or vacuum, along with Stasis, a device used to create time dilation on objects and enemies.
It is worth noting that Dead Space Remake will be built on the design of the spacesuit we know. According to the creative minds behind the upcoming remake, the spacesuit retains its original texture, such as the rib motif. However, it is definitely worth noting that the garment will have many new features that will make it different from the original. For example, the revisited RIG comes with several thrusters that allow Isaac to glide under zero gravity.
The latest video teases more with the highly anticipated title and reveals a series of sketches and concept images of Isaac’s team. Those who want to take on the role of the brave engineer with his new outfit will be able to do so as of January 27, 2023.
